We have had two days of vary nice weather, and then yesterday evening it turned back to typical Seward weather and it is cloudy, with some light rain on and off, and cool. Tonight is the fireworks display at midnight, it is going to be interesting with the clouds, and the lack of darkness. We are enjoying our spot on the water, and don’t mind the dry camping, we are very used to that now. We had the rig next to use leave about 5 days ago and they asked if we wanted their spot, because it had electric, and water. We told them thank you but we were good with the spot we are in. A few minutes later there was a knock on our door, and a woman said “Hi we are going to be your new neighbors” they were camped out of town a few miles and came down just to see if they could find a site here on the water. Their timing was perfect and I told them I would park the jeep in the site to hold it while they went back and broke camp and headed down here. About an hour later they showed up and got settled in. You know us we started chatting with them, and have struck up a friendship.
We have struck up a great friendship with Tony and Nannette over the last week. They in turn where up doing laundry, and struck up a conversation with another couple. They told them that the site next to us was open. Nannette called me and asked us to save it for this couple, so we did. Matt, and Shelly showed up about an hour later. Matt, and Chelley are from West Branch, Michigan. West Branch is where my two Great Uncles lived most of their lives. They lived with my Great Grandmother and Great Grand Father on a ranch they owned in the area. My dad and his brother spent their summers there growing up. My Grand Father was a career military man and served in the Calvary, Army, Naval Air Core, and fought in both WWI, and WWII. Since my Grand Father was always away, my Grand Mother would take dad, and my uncle up to the ranch every summer. My dad told stories all the time my sister and I were growing up about his adventures on the ranch. If you have ever seen the movie “Second Hand Lions” you will understand my two Great Uncles. Dad was very close to his uncles, and planned to take the ranch over when he first went to college, and decided to major in agriculture. Dad changed his mind quickly and took a different path. So it was very cool to meet someone from there. They turned out to be really cool people and the six of us had a wonderful few days together. Tony and I got a load of fire wood delivered earlier in the week, so we had a big campfire each night, it was great fun.
On July 3rd some people we have been in contact with on the RVillage.com website was having a get-together, so Pia and I headed down to meet with these folks we have been corresponding with for the last 8 months. There were about 20 people or so and we spent an hour and a half meeting them and chatting with them. It was fun to put faces with names, and talk about where we all had been and where we were going.
Tony, Nannette, Matt, Chelley, Pia and I all stayed for the 4th and walked into town to see the Mountain Marathon. This race is the second oldest in the United States (Boston is the first). It is a short run but it goes straight up a mountain, and then straight down again. It starts in town on the main street, and the town population goes from 5,000 to 30,000 for this weekend. It is a brutal race that starts maybe a 100 feet above sea-level and goes to 3200 feet at the summit. It is quite a show and I got some great video that I will post on my You-Tube Channel when we get back, and have deceit internet.
All good things must come to an end, and so it is with our stay in Seward with our new friends. Matt, and Shelly left that afternoon. They were in a rental RV that had to be turned in on Wednesday morning in Anchorage, so they divided up all their supplies and groceries and gave them to the four of us. Tony and Nannette are leaving today, and so are we.
